My favorite non-tenyo magic manufacturers

Post by John B. » Fri Jul 19, 2013 7:45 pm

There are plenty of wonderful manufacturers out there. I wanted to share a list of a few that I really like, and I think may appeal to some of the people on this forum.

Magic Wagon:
Magic Wagon make beautiful pieces of apparatus. They make both wooden and resin pieces, and the build quality is excellent. Highly recommended!

http://www.magic-wagon.com

Dave Powell Magic Company:
Very nice wooden effects.

http://www.powellmagic.com/shop/

Mikame:
Wooden pieces at affordable prices.

Richard Gerlitz Magic:
Top of the line! Richard's pieces are exquisite, and I have seen a few up close. The build quality, and manufacturing tolerances are unlike anything else I have seen in magic. Richard employs meticulous attention to detail, and I have seen a few with very intricate and highly mechanical secrets.

Some of Richard's other pieces can be found at the links below:

Those are indeed great manufacturers John. I own quite a few Magic Wagon pieces (started collecting a year and a half ago or so) and most of them are great. However, not every item they put out is a winner, trust me.

I own Dave Powell's Enchanted Ring (a must have for every magic collector) and have ordered his new Victorian Prediction. I love good looking Drawer Boxes (I own Mikame's Drawer Box for cards, long unavailable, for my invisible deck routine - if anyone is interested in this routine please pm me) and this new one by Dave Powell can be inspected and nothing will be found. It also looks stunning and comes with a special trick: http://www.powellmagic.com/shop/index.p ... uct_id=102
It will be easy to do and Dave Powell told me in an e-mail I will certainly love it if I like cleverly made gimmicked apparatus (the drawer box does NOT work with your typical sliding panel gimmick). Once I receive it I will review it.

Other manufacturers to look for are Magiro and Eckhard Böttcher (the guy that owned (and still owns?) Zauberbutike (http://www.zauber-butike.de/)

One manufacturer I was surprised not seeing in your list John is Alan Warner :) Do you people know he still makes magic tricks, even quite a few that are offered on Ebay as 'discontinued' or 'long unavailable' ?! He builds them on demand :) He still makes one or two new items each year.
You can contact him personally at warnermagic@lineone.net - he will send you a list of items he still produces with prices :)
Among my favourites (he still makes!) are Voo Doo, Mini Mental, Pentra, Enigmatic and Li Chang Boxes.

I agree Richard Gerlitz is top of the line but VERY expensive. He only makes 5 - 10 items each time. I have contacted him but for now he stopped producing magic tricks because of domestic problems.

Hi David,

Thanks for the reply. I too have the enchanted ring by Powell, and agree that it is a "must have." I had the aluminum version from Tannen's as a kid, but prefer the look of the wooden version. I saw the new Victorian Prediction and will probably buy it. Please let me know what you think when it arrives.

I have seen the Alan Warner pieces, but they didn't resonate with me. Probably just not to my taste, but I know they are quite popular.

I ordered the new Magic Wagon item on Monday- will be curious to see it. I agree that Magic Wagon are not all great and the items are too expensive to buy them all. I have passed on a bunch already this year and am trying to only get the ones I want. I have had a hard time looking for Magiro items- I would like to have his version of the Wand and Block Mystery- if I cannot find one, I will make one of my own with an Asian-inspired design at some point.

John, a litle surprise for you, I bought my Magiro Wand and Block Mystery and Coin And Bolt here: http://www.cannon-secrets.de/menu.html - e-mail the seller, you'll probably have one in a few weeks ;)
As you can see he also sells other Magiro recreations.

I also ordered the new Diceolation by MW from Tony Curtis, I have an idea of how it works ... those guys love to use m****** don't they ;)

For me, Tenyo mean well engineered unique plastic gimmicks.

I believe the Paul Harris line has several cool items right up Tenyo's alley.

Paul Harris also was one of the first to popularize Lubor's Lens (see Tenyo's 4-D Surprise) in his Reality Twister.

Take a closer look at: Rattled, Skycap, Movemint, INK...

They may not be as "easy" to perform as Tenyo, but you may still like them.

Jenzo Harmonics makes a fantastic range of wooden tenyo tricks and I hear he doesn't even want any money for them, just some bits of plastic (albeit in a very specific collection of shapes bit still, bargain!)
*cough*
Now you see me...

I only collect from every manifacturer the tricks that puzzle me or that I think are beautifully made.

My favourite ones are: (in random order)

Perfekte wanderung (Magiro)
Image
There are two closed cylinders on a wooden tablet, one big one and one small one. The spectator can choose one cylinder, open it and put a scarf inside. They can have a look from the bottom, from the side from the top to see if there is anything special. Even they can mark the cylinder with a marker to be able to see which one is the one. After a magic gesture they can open the cylinder and see that the scarf has disappeared from one cylinder and moved to the other one. Excellent!

Excalibur (Future Magic)
Image
The magician placed a ring, previously examined by the audience, in the slot and placed Excalibur, the sword with magical powers, through the bore so that the ring is trapped in the slot. The ring is now lifted through the sword. After the ring is replaced, it cannot be lifted anymore and is indeed held by the sword again.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hf277sevNa4

Heart of Gold (Mikame)
Image
A ring (or coin or small other obect)vanishes from one place and ends up inside the heart. Can also be used for exchanging items...The last part of the video is staged...not possible to do so quickly
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhSqLvwqlkc

Samourai Sword (Collectors Workshop)
Image
A borrowed ring from a spectator disappears from the magicians hands and ends up on the sword that is licked between two poles. You even hear the sound of the ring on the sword when it happens. Great magic!

Roberto and Peter and other Magiro lovers, yes, I would love to write an article about Magiro, so if you have any information or photo's don't hesitate to send them (you both have my e-mail I believe and if not you can find it on my website)!

Thanks in advance.

I find this trick also very convincing, it should even be possible to have everything investigated, which I can hardly believe. I had once seen a copy of this trick at a German magic dealer and
now I am annoyed not to have bought it, unfortunately it is no longer available. I had totally underestimated the genius of this trick. Does anyone know where I can get this trick ?

That was a new one to me! Very cool effect, I had to think really hard to figure it out. Might make my own version one day, should be quite easy.

I think it might be possible to make a version where all the items can be examined both separately and together. :-)

I don't really see any good reason for having the screen section foldable, though. Except for storage purposes, so I think I'd prefer one that was just a solid piece.

You can still get this effect from the link below.
I think the price is good too. They call it Devil’s Dice.

https://newmagicline.com/zaubertrickssh ... -dice.html

ØyvindK, if you are able to produce this affect and a fully examinable version, I sure would love to have a copy! :-)

Hey, i have also found this link again, this was the version i had in my mind ...
But this is not to get any longer, have ask today, is a old website link, all sold out
and the producer has retired they told me, maybe they found a new source for it ?

As i have watched this demo, i came up with a easier solution as i had before in mind
So i have now two ways which could work, but maybe both are wrong and a third is it

I would say, this video is the key to enlightenment

Well, he doesn't even try to hide the move, so yes. I deduced it from Roberto's video (because that was the only video I could find), and he makes it much harder. :-)

How about this version? I believe it is a better made version however, it is a little more pricey.

Great find, looks very good except for the stick - Yes, more pricy but it is wood and well made
I totally missed it when I was on his side, probably because of the other look, magic distractions

But this wooden stick has one decisive advantage > https://youtu.be/z4wBLEMSlcU

I have the "Wunderwürfel" from the new Zauber Butike. It's appealing and solidly crafted and looks good on the shelf. But the stick looks like a tool and make things quite obvious. That keeps me away from performing the trick.
