Jumping Die

I find this particular effect to be very puzzling. Watching the video, I can understand what has to happen, but can’t grasp how it is happening! I love the simplicity of the props and the fact that everything can be examined!

See the effect here: https://youtu.be/d-SbwUL-fUI

I agree, a very surprising effect ⭐️

I'm also puzzling over the working 🤔

I also saw this the other day, and I do see how it's done, but it is a good trick. I think I'll do my own version of this, since it is so simple, but yet effective.

Thank you Peter for mentioning this small but very nice effect!

I saw this effect too, and I love it!

I was surprised by the quick way the ribbon goes from left to right without any hesitation…

Yes this is very suitable for Øyvind and Collin to make a nice 3D printed version. Guys, time to warm up your printers :)

Creating the props for this is pretty easy, the challenge is the performance. The performance in the video is very good (although there is a very minor exposure), and I am currently not sure how to pull it off properly. I think he is doing something clever that I have not yet figured out completely.

I was amazed that you understood the trick so quickly

I have not discovered any clues so far ...

The working principle is very obvious to me, but as I said, his handling is clever, and I haven't completely figured that out yet.

Edit: I rewatched the video and I found the missing piece to the puzzle. Very clever indeed!

In a live performance done properly, spectators will never be able to spot how it's done, but they will probably understand what must have happened to make the die jump. Just not how.

Will also look at it again and hope to discover some more clues 🔎

Sometimes a solution comes to you when you least expect it! I’ve been just going about my day when inspiration hit me and I ran back and re-watched the video! Wow!!! Simple but very clever and that now reveals the missing piece of the puzzle! Amazing little trick, and wonderful misdirection! Love it!

Finally I found a very clear clue but the whole picture is not yet complete

I must continue to contemplate until enlightenment reaches me as well

I’ve also found what I believe to be the same effect under a different name called Rib-Block. See here: https://www.martinsmagic.com/allmagic/s ... ay-leslie/. Notice the very clever use of the tacks on this version, it means the containment box can be made without any extra additions. As well as Jay Leslie and Mark Jacobs I also see the name John Snyder connected to the effect. I am unable to located it again, but on a past search I also came across photos of what might be the very first release of this effect. The block had dado’s cut across each face to assist in executing the effect. Maybe that’s where the name “Rib” came from. Cool to see the history and progression of the different releases with each subtle change!
