Re: T-126 Match-Sticks
this is one of my newer tenyos that I got..
think the concept of it is really good,
but i get that "what are you hiding?!!"
"gimme those sticks!" comments
not examinable, so i didnt give it a high score

I haven't open mine yet so still do not know exactly the secret but as i have watched from the video, the way he holds the sticks is suspicious however i love mentalism tricks.
Thanks David for this thread.

Re: T-126 Match-Sticks
I don't like this trick that much, but it is diabolical clever of course. I think the move is suspicious as Jamie said. A very skilled magician with good misdirection can probably pull it off but I can't.
I hope we'll get some advice in this thread on how to perform it without arousing too much suspicion
PS: no problem Jamie, Mindspinner will be one of the following.

Re: T-126 Match-Sticks
It's an interesting trick. I'm starting to get drawn more and more towards mental magic tricks. Funny that when I first started, I was dead-set against them.
But regarding this trick; maybe it's because I still have my 'laymen-eyes' still installed, but I'm not sure what I should be looking for regarding 'the move'. I mean, I kind of see something, but I'm not sure exactly what I should be looking for.
But if the trick is difficult to pull because of this, I'd like to know more about it to try my hand at it. I loved making a routine with Crystal Pyramid to hide the noisy gimmick.
Let's see. If you're worried about the audience seeing 'the move' I guess you'd have to be a good storyteller to keep their focus away. But it seems like you HAVE to look at the sticks, which would detract from what you're saying. But, like Crystal Pyramid, if you draw attention to the gimmick and make it a part of the story, it should be fine. I have an idea of what kind of a routine MAY work for this going only off of the video. I'm thinking of the game 'Liars Dice'.
This is going to sound silly because this is the first time I have heard of Matchsticks. But for those that have this: Do you HAVE to look at the sticks each time you and the spectator make a pick?

No you don't, but you do need to remember the 'order' of them

My next question would be if the sticks are gimmicked. If so is it all of them or half of them?David DeTenyo wrote:No you don't, but you do need to remember the 'order' of them
Or is this asking a bit much?

They are not gimmicked in a Tenyo-esque mechanical way, but they are gimmicked. All of them.

Re: T-126 Match-Sticks
I like really like this trick. It is a nice different and somewhat original mental effect. However the trick does depend completely on the smoothness of the performer.
Frankly I think you can hold the sticks in a less suspicious manner than the person in the video. And it definitely requires some practice to get the routine down.

Re: T-126 Match-Sticks
Present the trick as a game that sailors played at sea. Because the game was fairly uncommon, there were not very many of them on ships. The idea is to pick a stick that is higher than the owner of the game. If the non owner gets a higher numbered stick, they win the game and get all the sticks. If there is a tie, you keep going until all the sticks are gone.
Something along those lines

That would work nicely if they were made in wood. If only someone could make such a thing...

Re: T-126 Match-Sticks
I agree, while the trick and method is clever, the move is very awkward.David DeTenyo wrote:I don't like this trick that much, but it is diabolical clever of course. I think the move is suspicious as Jamie said. A very skilled magician with good misdirection can probably pull it off but I can't.
I hope for a new handling in the Tenyo-ism book by Richard Kaufman.

Ahh- now this is indeed a beautiful set!
Re: T-126 Match-Sticks
I just looked up the pictures in Simons profile of the wooden Matchsticks.
I think the meme I'm thinking of is: 'Shut up and take my money!'

Re: T-126 Match-Sticks
hah! you're most kind. funnily enough they were one of the hardest tricks to get right. in order to work the grains of the wood had to be considered, they all had to be cut, smoothed sealed and waxed, and only after that I had to line up the laser dead centre (normally you'd laser at the same time as cut but as these were cut by hand it was trickier)
I had a few fails and also a few near misses with the ends of my fingers and the band saw!
all goo fun tho

Re: T-126 Match-Sticks
This is a great trick ... so clever.
No, you don't have to hold the sticks the way the person in the video does.
This hint should be enough to make you split with the bucks for the trick: no matter which two bars the spectator points at, they will always match.
